Your annual visit

What happens at a well woman exam

A well woman exam, sometimes called a well woman visit or annual exam, is a preventive visit focused on your overall health. At Pathway, it usually includes:

  1. Medical history review. Your medical history, family history, menstrual cycle, sexual health, medications and any health conditions.
  2. Physical exam. Blood pressure, weight, heart, lungs, thyroid and abdomen.
  3. Clinical breast exam. A check of the breasts and underarms, plus guidance on breast health and mammograms.
  4. Pelvic exam and pap smear when due. A pelvic exam checks the reproductive organs, and a pap smear or HPV test screens for cervical cancer.
  5. Screenings and labs. Cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid and other medical tests based on your age and risk.
  6. Health education and next steps. Birth control, vaccines, bone health, nutrition, exercise and a plan for anything we find.

Prevention

Recommended screenings by age

Screening recommendations change, and your history may call for a different schedule. The well woman exam is also a good time to bring up symptoms you have been putting off, like irregular periods, hot flashes, low libido or fatigue.

We help you schedule mammograms, bone density scans and other screenings through local imaging centers.

General guidelines

  • Cervical cancer: a pap smear every 3 years from 21 to 29; from 30 to 65, a pap every 3 years, an HPV test every 5 years, or both every 5 years
  • Breast cancer: a mammogram every 2 years from 40 to 74, sooner if you are at higher risk
  • Blood pressure: at every visit
  • Cholesterol and blood sugar: regularly in adulthood, more often with risk factors
  • Bone density: starting at 65, or earlier with risk factors
  • Sexually transmitted infections: based on age and risk

Family nurse practitioner or women's health nurse practitioner?

A women's health nurse practitioner (WHNP) focuses only on women's reproductive and gynecologic care. A family nurse practitioner (FNP) like Tia is trained to care for patients across the lifespan, including well woman exams, hormones and primary care, so one provider can manage your whole health picture. For pregnancy and postpartum care, we refer to obstetric providers.

FAQ

Women's health questions

How often should I get a well woman exam?

Most women benefit from a well woman exam once a year, even when a pap smear is not due. It is a chance to review your health, screenings and any new symptoms.

Do I still need a well woman exam after menopause?

Yes. After menopause, the well woman exam shifts toward breast health, bone health, heart health, vaginal and urinary symptoms and menopausal care. Pap smears may stop after 65 if past results were normal, but the yearly visit still matters.

Is a nurse practitioner a good choice for women's health?

Yes. Nurse practitioners provide much of the women's health care in the United States. Tia Christ is a board-certified family nurse practitioner with advanced training in hormone therapy and functional medicine.

What should I bring to my well woman exam?

Bring your medical history, a list of medications and supplements, the first day of your last period, past pap smear or mammogram results if you have them, and a list of questions. Nothing is too small or too awkward to bring up.

Do you do pap smears?

Yes. Pap smears and HPV testing are done as part of a well woman exam when you are due, based on your age and history.

Do you provide birth control?

We offer birth control counseling and prescriptions for many methods. For IUD or implant placement, ask us when you call.

Do you offer prenatal care?

No. We refer pregnancy and postpartum care to obstetric providers and certified nurse midwives, and we can coordinate with them.

Does insurance cover a well woman exam?

Many insurance plans cover a yearly well woman visit at in-network offices. At Pathway, an annual physical is included in our memberships, lab work can often be billed to insurance, and we will give you the price before your visit.
