Hair restoration in Tulsa and Owasso

Hair restoration at Pathway starts with finding out why your hair is thinning, then treating it with non surgical options that support hair growth.

For many women and men, hair loss is tied to hormones, thyroid problems, low iron, stress or genetics. Tia Christ, APRN-CNP, a board-certified nurse practitioner and Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, checks your labs and builds a treatment plan that can combine prescription medications, platelet rich plasma (PRP) and nutrition. The clinic is in Owasso, a short drive from Tulsa.

Root causes

What causes thinning hair?

Hair grows in cycles. In the growth phase, called the anagen phase, hair follicles actively make new hair. When something shortens that phase or shrinks the follicles, hair density drops.

Androgenetic alopecia, also called pattern hair loss, often shows as a receding hairline or thinning crown in men. Female pattern hair loss usually shows as a widening part. Stress, illness and rapid weight loss, including fast weight loss on GLP-1 medications, can trigger telogen effluvium, a sudden shedding a few months later.

Patchy hair loss, scalp pain or scarring can signal an autoimmune or scarring condition. We refer those to a dermatologist.

Common causes

  • Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
  • Perimenopause, menopause, PCOS and postpartum changes
  • Underactive or overactive thyroid
  • Low ferritin, vitamin D or protein
  • Stress, illness and rapid weight loss
  • Some blood pressure, mood and acne medications

Treatment options

Hair loss treatment for women and men

Because most hair loss has more than one cause, the best results usually come from a combination of treatments. Finasteride is not used by women who are or may become pregnant. Tia will talk through the benefits and potential risks of each option.

Option How it works Best for
Lab testing and root-cause care Finds and treats thyroid, iron, hormone and nutrient problems Everyone, before anything else
Minoxidil Lengthens the growth phase and enlarges follicles Pattern hair loss in women and men
Finasteride Lowers the hormone DHT that shrinks follicles Men with pattern hair loss
Spironolactone Blocks androgen effects Some women with pattern hair loss or PCOS
PRP injections Growth factors from your own blood support follicles Early to moderate thinning
Microneedling of the scalp Small injuries may boost growth factors and absorption Often combined with PRP or minoxidil
Hair transplant Moves follicles from a donor area Advanced baldness with stable donor hair
Gloved hands holding a blood sample tube used to prepare platelet rich plasma

PRP

How PRP for hair loss works

Platelet rich plasma is made from your own blood. We draw a small amount, then spin it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red blood cells and the platelet poor plasma. Platelets carry growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor and fibroblast growth factor. Injected into thinning areas of the scalp, these growth factors are thought to support the dermal papilla, the part of the follicle that drives hair growth.

PRP injections are usually done as three treatments about 4 weeks apart, then a booster session every 4 to 6 months. Studies show PRP can improve hair density in pattern hair loss, but results vary, research is still growing, and PRP is not FDA approved specifically for hair loss.

Surgical options

Non surgical hair restoration vs hair transplant

Non surgical hair restoration is non invasive or minimally invasive, with a quicker recovery and no linear scar. It works best when you still have existing hair to strengthen.

A hair transplant is a surgical option done by hair restoration surgeons. In follicular unit extraction (FUE hair transplants), individual follicles are taken from the donor area at the back of the head. In follicular unit transplantation (FUT), a strip is removed and leaves a linear scar. Transplanted hair can blend seamlessly with your own, but it is a bigger procedure under local anesthesia, hair transplant cost often runs into the thousands of dollars, and most people still need medication afterward.

Hair transplantation has been used in the U.S. since the 1950s. Hair grows naturally in clusters of one to four hairs, called follicular units, and modern transplants move those units intact. A procedure can take most of a day, and visible results from hair transplants usually take 9 to 12 months.

Who is a good candidate?

  • Your hair is thinning but you still have hair in the thinning areas
  • Hair loss started in the last few years
  • You want to avoid surgery or are not ready for a hair transplant
  • You want to find and treat the cause, not just the symptom

FAQ

Hair restoration questions

Does PRP for hair loss really work?

Studies show PRP can increase hair density for many people with pattern hair loss, especially when started early. Results vary, and it works best as part of a full treatment plan.

Is PRP safe?

PRP is considered very safe because it uses your own blood, so there is no risk of an allergic reaction to the plasma itself. PRP contains at least six different growth factors. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery notes that results vary, and some patients benefit more than others.

How long does it take to see hair regrowth?

Most people notice less shedding in 2 to 3 months and visible growth in 4 to 6 months. Full results can take a year.

Is hair loss in women treatable?

Yes. Female pattern hair loss, hormone-related thinning and shedding from low iron or thyroid problems are all treatable, especially when the cause is found early.

Is minoxidil FDA approved for women?

Yes. Topical minoxidil is FDA approved to stimulate hair growth in both women and men with pattern hair loss. Low-dose oral minoxidil is a newer, off-label option that some providers prescribe.

Is PRP painful?

The scalp is numbed first. Most people feel pressure and mild discomfort for a few minutes, and the scalp may feel tender for a day.

Do I need to keep treating my hair forever?

Pattern hair loss is ongoing, so most people need maintenance, such as a daily medication or a PRP booster session every 4 to 6 months, to keep their results.

Can weight loss medications cause hair loss?

Rapid weight loss from any cause, including GLP-1 medications, can trigger temporary shedding. Enough protein, iron and a steady pace of weight loss help. It usually improves on its own. See medical weight loss.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. Start with a free discovery call to talk through your hair loss and your options.
